Measurement of atmospheric production depths of muons with the pierre auger observatory

چکیده
The time structure of muons at ground retains valuable information about the longitudinal development of the hadronic component in extensive air showers. Using the signals collected by the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory it is possible to reconstruct the Muon Production Depth (MPD) distribution. In this work we explore the main features of these reconstructions for zenith angles around 60 and different energies of the primary particle. From the MPDs we define a new observable, X max, as the depth, along the shower axis, where the maximum number of muons is produced. The potentiality of X max to infer the mass composition of cosmic rays is studied.

Using measured events from the fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory, an unbiased distribution of the atmospheric slant depths where showers reach their maxima has been obtained. Analyzing the tail of this distribution the proton-air cross-section for particle production at center-of-mass energies per nucleon of 57 TeV is determined to be [505±22(stat)+28−36(syst)] mb. Two test detectors similar to the Pierre Auger Observatory Water Cherenkov Detectors have been installed at the Observatory site and at the Institut de Physique Nucléaire d’Orsay. The signals from the tanks are read out using three 9” photomultipliers and analyzed by both a digital oscilloscope with high sampling frequency and the Auger surface detector electronics. Additionally, the detectors ...

The building block of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is a water Cherenkov tank. The response to shower particles is simulated using a dedicated program based on GEANT4. To check the simulation chain, we compare the simulated signals produced by cosmic muons at various zenith angles with experimental data from a special Cherenkov detector equipped with a muon hodoscope. The...
متن کاملAtmospheric Monitoring at the Pierre Auger Observatory – Status and Update
Calorimetric measurements of extensive air showers are performed with the fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. To correct these measurements for the effects introduced by atmospheric fluctuations, the Observatory operates several instruments to record atmospheric conditions across and above the detector site. New developments have been made in the study of the aerosol optical ...
متن کاملThe importance of atmospheric monitoring at the Pierre Auger Observatory
The Pierre Auger Observatory is an ultra-high energy cosmic ray experiment employing a giant surface array of particle detectors together with telescopes to image fluorescence light from extensive air showers in the atmosphere. The atmosphere is the medium in which the incoming cosmic rays deposit their energy, and as a result we must monitor the characteristics of the atmosphere, including its...
